Stories Too Short to Post

Stories and miscellaneous lighthouse news that does not require a story, but may interest the readers.  These I will store here for reference.

November 19, 2012New Point Loma Lighthouse

A replacement for the Historic Point Loma Lighthouse, this working lighthouse is used by the U.S. Coast Guard. The lighthouse has been fully automated since 1973, which unfortunately does not mean it is run by robots. Look for the keeper’s quarters nearby—they were used as a setting in Top Gun. August 03, 2012 – Global Networking at the 2012 International Lighthouse & Lightship Weekend

Technology in our time races forward at lightning and sometimes frightening speed. But have you ever wondered what would happen if our communications technology failed on a local or global scale?

It may seem like a question for science fiction fans but in a real disaster, the solution to communication already exists and is wonderfully preserved by small groups of dedicated Ham Radio Clubs and Lighthouse Stations.

The Fog – Best Scary Movie Starring Point Reyes Lighthouse

You may have heard of this John Carpenter film – myself, I have never seen it. I was going to write about it, but May, the author at Completely Coastal has done such a good job, I thought I would turn you over to her. Enjoy . . . [link]

A Lighthouse Opera?

I had never heard of a lighthouse opera until now, and being not a fan of operas, I was a bit skeptical as well. OK, I found a Youtube video of The Lighthouse, an opera by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies and I am not impressed. This is a short ten (10) minute cut from the opera.

October 12, 2012 – Now, I came across another review in The Telegraph of a different performance by the English Touring Opera. The comments were:

Few instances of that staple mystery, the unexplained maritime vanishing (as in the Mary Celeste or the Bermuda Triangle) can be more baffling than that of the three keepers who dematerialised without trace from their lighthouse in the Hebrides in 1900.
Peter Maxwell Davies’s fictionalised reconstruction of this tale has been hugely successful since its premiere in 1980, and Continue reading Mise Tales Fourteen

Do You Want to Buy a Foghorn?

Aberdeen’s Torry Coo on the market for £5,000
Buyers lining up for foghorn

Published: 28/09/2012 Evening Express

A famous foghorn in Aberdeen has sparked a bidding war between prospective buyers desperate to own a piece of Scottish history.

And property agents revealed several offers made for the much-loved Torry Coo in Aberdeen were “well in excess” of the asking price.

The Northern Lighthouse Board put the 110-year-old horn and store building on the market in July with a price tag of £5,000, but several mystery bidders want to get their hands on the Category A listed structure. Continue reading Mise Tales Twelve

This is too cute not to show you all. I discovered this page by accident, and could not stop going oooh and ahhh! It is priceless, and I mean that literally, as this item is a one of a kind according to the experts. According to the article:

The object is an early 19th century miniature musical automaton movement that controls a nautical scene. The scene features a gilt lighthouse set on cliffs of green and brown painted wood. A gilded ship sits on a painted sea in front of the cliffs. The ship rocks to and fro as though in a storm while a (then unidentified) tune plays on a plucked comb. more ->

I know many people do not use checks/cheques these days, but if you do, AND you like lighthouses, here is a company that produces Lighthouse Checks!

Check out checkadvantage.com for these checks. They have four different designs which you can see on their website. I will keep them in mind for my next batch of cheques.

OK, here’s another one. A lighthouse on a USA Waterfowl Hunting Stamp. I know there are lighthouses on Postage Stamps, but never realized they did it for Hunting Stamps. Are there any more out there? This one is for 1994 and shows Oak island lighthouse. The full story is here on the Southport Times website.

Refuge visitors can take away a slice of historic lighthouse

145-year-old window panes turned into medallions

CHINCOTEAGUE — What does one do with piles of broken, historic glass?

Beth Hanback asked herself that question in 2009 after 145-year-old window panes were removed from Assateague Lighthouse’s lantern room.

“I thought, ‘Well, I can melt it down and make something out of it,'” said Hanback, executive director of the Chincoteague Natural History Association, a nonprofit group involved with lighthouse restoration. Continue reading Mise Tales Ten

LIGHTHOUSE GIN – A BEACON OF HOPE FOR GIN LOVERS EVERYWHERE

I am planning on making a post later on the use of the lighthouse symbol in advertising, but this advertisement for Lighthouse Gin from New Zealand came across my desk and it was too good not to mention.

Nicely designed website, New Zealand product, lots of information, and some delightful recipes for those that like gin.

The source for this link actually came from The Dominion Post website in new Zealand that had a recipe for Gin and Tonic cake. One of the ingredients was this Lighthouse Gin, so I just had to research it.

This seems to be turning into an advertising Misc Tales post. Today I found this website for Lighthouse FTO Coffee Bright & Light produced by the Chesapeake Bay Roasting Company, USA. At $12.99 US it is not too bad a price.

For the lighthouse collector, there are several more varieties available in different cans, so you will have to drink a lot of coffee to make up the whole collection!

I love lighthouse wallpaper. I have never heard of Pinterest, but combine the two and you get something like the photo at the left. The Pinterest  name is derived from “pin your interests” – sort of a neat idea. Anyways, this is a display that someone made of lighthouses, with links to their sources. Quite nice!

new Zealand house photos

OK, you like lighthouses. What if you had lots of money? What would you build? A couple in New Zealand built a house that resembles a lighthouse . . . well, a little bit! Take a look. There are two sources; the first copied from the second, but unless you can read Russian, the first is better!

The Lighthouse by Mathew Welch

Submitted: Saturday, November 25, 2006
Edited: Saturday, November 27, 2010
from the Poem Hunter

Into the night like a cold staring eye
It lights the way for the crew
Up on the cliff it sits so high
Creating safe passage and view
All through the night

Into the harbour the ship lays at rest
Unscratched and afloat
The work of the house was at its best
To give guidance to the tiny boat
In the dark, it was the light
