LONDON — What used to be Winter Storm Hercules has moved across the Atlantic and is now hammering the United Kingdom with high winds and winter weather.. Britain’s western coast is being lashed by high winds and strong rains following a month of unusually frequent winter storms.
A steady procession of storms has battered the island nation over the past few weeks, making December the windiest since 1969. Monster waves up to 27 feet (8.3 meters) high washed across the British coast on Monday, prompting evacuations and rescues.
“This latest storm actually originated as Winter Storm Hercules in the U.S. just after the New Year’s holiday,” said weather.com Senior Meteorologist Jon Erdman.

The nearly non-stop storms have crumbled long-standing sea cliffs and damaged waterfronts.
“It’s been one after the other with no break,” Nicola Maxey, a spokeswoman for Britain’s Meteorological Office, said Tuesday.
More than 100 flood warnings remain across England and Wales.
“This latest Atlantic storm will slowly wind down and weaken over the Norwegian Sea off Scandinavia through Tuesday, giving way to a well-deserve reprieve from the stormy barrage the rest of the work week,” said Erdman.
Heavy winds and rain have also battered the French coast, driving large waves into southwestern town of Biarritz on Tuesday. [/private]

Active Pass and Estevan Point Lighthouses Designated under Heritage Lighthouse Legislation . . . more

The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Canada’s Environment Minister and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, today designated two more lighthouses in British Columbia under the Canadian Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act (HLPA): Active Pass and Estevan Point Lighthouses.
The HLPA, which was adopted in 2008, allows for the protection of federally-owned lighthouses on Canada’s coastal and inland waters that have significant heritage value. Administered by Parks Canada, the HLPA helps ensure Canada’s maritime history is protected for the benefit and enjoyment of present and future generations.
Canadians have nominated hundreds of lighthouses to be considered for designation under the Act.

- Active Pass Heritage Lighthouse and Estevan Point Heritage Lighthouse are located in two protected areas (Gulf Islands National Park Reserve of Canada and Hesquiat Peninsula Provincial Park, respectively).
- The Active Pass Lighthouse can be seen by millions of ferry passengers sailing each year between Vancouver Island and Vancouver.
- The Estevan Point Lighthouse, located in the Hesquiat Peninsula, was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine during the Second World War.
- Two other British Columbia lighthouses, East Point and Fisgard, were designated heritage lighthouses in May 2013.

Mega Yacht Crashes into Point-no-Point Lighthouse
HANSVILLE–A terrifying scene at the Point-no-Point State Park unraveled late Thursday afternoon as the iconic lighthouse perched on the northernmost tip of the Kitsap Peninsula unexpectedly collided with a 126 foot mega yacht just before 3 pm.
Initial reports from bystanders and park officials claim that the Point-no-Point Lighthouse made a series of irrational and ill-timed maneuvers in the events leading up to the crash, subsequently obstructing the unsuspecting oncoming boat. . . more

One onlooker described the actions of the lighthouse operator as taunting, claiming that the operator “was waving her hands up and down and screaming frantically in an aggressive manner just before the wreck”.
The Zune is a 16000 ton vessel owned by former Microsoft executive and billionaire Paul Allen. Built in 2007, The Zune was designed to withstand heavy abuse from man made stationary objects. Steven Johnson, captain of the Zune and 15 year maritime veteran said “It came out of nowhere. We are just lucky that no one got injured. There was an obvious error on behalf of the lighthouse operator.”
Lighthouse Operator Sharon Jones did not give a statement to the press, and was reportedly uncooperative with police and coastguard officials. She is under investigation for negligence and was placed on administrative leave immediately.
Paul Allen informed KR reporters that while he is grateful that no one on board was injured, he will be seeking compensation from Kitsap County for the damages to his boat. [/private]
